6 ways to create more social media content (while also running your design business)

If you want your social media accounts to grow then you have to put effort into creating content.

But I also get that running a design business full time and trying to stay on top of social media (and everything else you need to do) can be difficult.

So here are six tips for how to create more content without it taking over your entire life.

1: Better Systems

Have systems in place for capturing content ideas, scheduling content in advance and staying ahead of your posting.

I use Notion to organise all my content and content ideas.

Here’s the content I’m able to publish each day (by myself - no team).

With good systems it’s much easier to create a lot of content.

2: Make it easy on yourself

Don’t post original content on every platform.

My only original content are my blog posts, YouTube videos and Instagram posts.

Everything else is repurposed from there - for example:

  • Instagram posts become LinkedIn posts a few months later.

  • Pinterest pins are taken from my blog posts.

  • Instagram reels are repurposed to TikTok

  • Threads are taken from short form Instagram captions

  • Facebook posts are taken from Instagram

3: Repurpose old content

Repurpose your best performing old content a few months later - 99% of your community won’t have seen it anyway and even if they have they will have forgotten by then!

Use the insights area of your social media platforms to sort content that your community has found most engaging and repurpose this.

4: Be consistent

If you show up consistently your community (and the algorithms) will start to learn you are a person that can be trusted to show up for them.

But also don’t beat yourself up if you miss posts or feel like taking a break. This is your business and you need to make it work for you.

5: Quality over quantity

If you’re new to content creation start with getting consistent on ONE platform first, before you start trying to do too much on lots of platforms.

I’ve been posting content for nearly 10 years now and my systems have developed a lot over that time. That's why I can post on lots of platforms these days.

6: Be patient

Don’t expect you can post every day for a couple of weeks and then expect your account to grow or your followers to become more engaged.

The social media game takes TIME.

You need to be posting helpful, engaging, consistent content for months and years not days and weeks to see the results you're looking for.

But most importantly, do the hard work and provide valuable content to your community.

If your posts are boring and only about you then nobody will care.

Put effort into your posts and make them about your community and watch things change for the better.

If it were easy then everyone would be doing it!

It can take a long time for social media engagement to take hold, especially if your account is only small or you are just getting started.

I recently crossed 100K followers on my Instagram page and it has taken me nearly 10 years to get to this point. If you want the results you have to be willing to put in the work.

So stop blaming Instagram and the algorithm on your lack of growth and start working out how you can create better (and more consistent) content.

Thanks for reading and catch you in my next post :)
